THE MRS . L. C. METCALF FUNERAL In last week's Leader we stated that Mrs. L. C. Metcalf had passed away at the home of her son Clarence Metcalf, on Monday, May 29th, and that the funeral would be held Thursday afternoon. We did not receive the obituary in time for that issue. Mrs Metcalf's funeral was held at the M. E. Church Thursday afternoon,June 1st a large number of friends and relatives being in attendance. The church had been beautifully decorated with flowers and flowering plants around the altar and as is usual in most cases the casket was loaded down with fine cut flowers. As the Metcalf home is on the corner opposite from the church the Pallbearers H. A. Sherman, W. T. Cropper, Wilbur Tobias, Roy Sweet, Cliff Cole, Ernest Morris carried the casket from the house followed by the relatives of the deceased and the members of the “Old Ladies Club” of which she was a member. These ladies were Mrs. D. McGugin, Mrs. Ruth Sherman, Mrs. F . L. Hicks, Mrs. C. E. Sweet, Mrs. Louisa Garrison, Mrs. Alice Pulliam, Mrs. Dave Shaw, Mrs. M. E. Taylor and Mrs. I. C. Tobias. Originally this club had twelve members. Mrs. A. A. Baldwin and one of the twelve died two years ago. After all had been seated a mixed quartette, Mr. Francis Davis, Mrs. R. W. Hicks, Mrs. John Lovejoy, Mr. A. F. Phillips and Miss Pearl Leininger accompanying at the piano, sang “Abide with Me” which was followed by a scriptural selection and prayer by Rev. M. M. Long The Quartette then sang "Jesus, Saviour, Pilot Me.'' Then Rev. Long read an obituary of the deceased, accompanying the same with remark very complimentary to the worth of a life like Mrs. Metcalf had lived, following which he preached a very inspiring sermon upon the subject, '"The Power of an Endless Life" as suggested by the sixteenth verse of the seventh chapter of Hebrews. The quartette then sang "Safe In the Arms of Jesus”, after which her friends saw the face of Mrs. L. C. Metcalf for the last time. Interment was made in the Sargent Cemetery. Obituary: Lucia Crittenden was born at Bliss, New York, June 16th, 1837. and died at Sargent , Nebraska , May 29th, 1922, aged 84 years, 11 months and 13 days. She was married to Augustus Metcalf October 19th, 1857, at Bliss, New York. To this union God added his blessings in the gift of four sons:-Walter, Plin, Perry and Clarence, the first and third named living near Walworth Nebr. and the other two at Sargent , Nebr. There are also five grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. Without doubt the marks this beautiful life have been left upon these children and children’s children which will bear fruit to the honor and glory to Him whom she served so faithfully. Perhaps it may be of interest to state here that Mrs. Metcalf and her oldest son Walter S. were born in the same house, a log cabin belonging to the latter's grandfather, Milo Metcalf. Mrs Metealf's parents were there visiting at the Milo Metcalf cabin at the time of her birth. In 1872 Mr. and Mrs. Augustus Metcalf moved from New York state to Belmore, Putnam county Ohio where he was engaged in the mercantile business and was postmaster for several years Following his death Mrs. Metcalf acted as postmistress of Belmore for four years and also carried on the mercantile business. In 1883 Mrs. Metcalf disposed of her holdings in Ohio and together with her sons came to Custer County, Nebraska , and located on a homestead nine miles west of what is now the town of Sargent. Here she was called upon to endure all of the hardships incident to the pioneer life of those early days. During these years, through her labors and sacrifices, she contributed her full share to the development of this section of this country. In the year 1911 Mrs Metealf moved from the farm to Sargent at the same time her son Clarence Metcalf came here to engage in the implement business, and this city was her home from that time until her death. In early childhood the deceased united with the Baptist church, later, upon moving to Ohio, she united with the United Presbyterian church remaining a member of the same until coming to Nebraska when she united with the Methodist Episcopal Church and was a faithful and loyal member of the same until the close of her eventful life. She loved the Church and attended its services with pleasure and regularity. There seems to be something beautifully befitting in the fact that the last service which she permitted to attend was on Mother's Day. And as we think of it now it seems to us that many of the things that entered into the program on that day, had a personal application for her. (Pastor's personal word) For more than 20 years we have been visiting the sick watching at the bedside of the dying and not in all our experience have we seen a life close up its affairs more beautifully and sweetly. There seemed to be not one indication of fear or regret and not one word of regret was heard, but bright, happy and hopeful she faced the battle with like a heroin. “Servant of God well done, Thy battle is fraught, the victory one, And thou art Crowned at last” (We are indebted to Rev. M. M. Long for most of this obituary)
