From The Central City Nonpareil, June 18, 1891, page 5, transcribed by Linda Berney: During the storm Monday evening Mrs. James Santin who resides seven miles northeast of Palmer took refuge with her children and aged grandmother in a cave, or outside cellar, some three or four rods distant from their house. A flash of lightning struck both ladies, killing them instantly. Three small children, one a baby seven months old, held by the mother, were injured. The husband was absent at Fullerton at the time the accident occurred. The bodies were discovered shortly afterward by the father and brother who were returning from Palmer. ~~~~ From an 1891 Nance County newspaper clipping file, publication date unknown, transcribed by Linda Berney: About four o'clock on Monday afternoon, the 15th inst., Mrs. James Santon (sic) and her grandmother were killed by lightning while taking refuge in a cave from the storm. From the position of the bodies when found, it seems as if one or both of the women were holding the door down on the inside when the bolt struck the door about two thirds of the way up. It splintered a strip about one and a half inches wide to the bottom. Two children in the rear of the cave were not injured. Mrs. Santon leaves a husband and three children, the youngest a babe seven months old. Mr. Santon was in Fullerton when it happened. They were buried at Palmer on Wednesday.
