Bio

The Menard Messenger Vol. 10 No. 14 Thursday February 1, 1917 ---------------------------- (page 1) DEATH OF J. D. PETTIGREW Last week, Wednesday night at his home in London, occurred the death of J. D. Pettigrew, a pioneer of West Texas and a highly respected citizen of this section. Mr. Pettigrew has been ailing for some time and his death was not entirely unexpected by his friends and relatives. He was 89 years old at the time of his death and came to this vicinity 40 years ago. He was born in Arkansas and served faithfully with the Boys in Gray during the Civil war. He was the father of thirteen children eight of whom are living, four girls and four boys. The funeral services were held the following day at the London cemetery, Marion Adams having charge. Mr. Pettigrew leaves many friends who join with his family mourning his loss. Jim Pettigrew, a son of the deceased, was called to his bedside and stayed until after the funeral. NOTE: While I'm not related to this family, using the 1910 Mason County, Texas census I was able to locate an I.D. Pettigrew and his wife Sally with their children. Research into death certificates showed one son, Henry Elmer Pettigrew was the son of ISRAEL Delano (maybe Delany?) Pettigrew and Sallie Virginia Hodges-Pettigrew. I don't know whether the Menard News made the typo error of the J.D. name...or I did when I transcribed the article...but I believe it's safe to say that the "J.D" in the Menard News is actually Israel D. Pettigrew.
