Bio

Raymond W. Lucan, 84, of Rapid City passed away the early morning of Sunday, August 29, 2010 at Westhills Village Health Care in Rapid City after a brief illness. Ray was born in Rapid City on April 18, 1926 to Gus and Elsie Lucan. Ray and his sister Fern attended school here and graduated from Rapid City Central High School. He had joined the US Navy before graduating and left to serve in WWII right after graduating from high school in 1944. Ray served in the Navy from 1944-1946. After his honorable discharge, Ray came home and worked for the US Postal service before becoming an insurance representative for Lincoln National Life Insurance Company. He joined the National Guard in 1951 and was called into active duty during the Korean War. He married Lucy Jordan in 1948. They shared there life together until Lucy passed away in 1964 leaving him to raise their 2 daughters. As the years passed, he married Deanna Leber and they divorced after 18 years, he later married Bonnie Miller. Ray taught scuba diving at the YMCA for 12 years and also served as a life guard. Ray enjoyed wintering in Arizona from January through April (he vehemently disliked snow) and enjoyed helping his Arizona friends with their projects. Ray enjoyed hunting, fishing, giving blood, spending time with his family and friends, "staying busy", woodworking, and dancing which he was really good at. Ray was active in Boy Scouts of America receiving the Eagle Scout award in his youth and later serving as a scoutmaster and receiving the high honor of the Silver Beaver award of Scouting. He was an active Kiwanis club member actively serving on the local level as well as district positions including serving as the Minnesota-Dakota district governor from 1981-1982. He was a member of the South Park United Church of Christ, 12 year United Way volunteer, life member of the Elks Lodge, VFW, American Legion, Dinner Club, Antique Auto Club, and Black Hills Volksmarch. Leaving those he loved are his wife, Bonnie Lou Miller of Rapid City, 1 daughter Debbie Brand and her husband Verdell, son in law, Dave Hirchert and his life partner Peg Travis of Alaska, Ray's grandchildren, Lindi Koepp and her husband Dustin, Megan Cotter and her husband Brandon, Ray's great grandchildren, Trace, Macey, Shayne, and Graylin all of Rapid City. Bonnie's children and grandchildren were a big part of his life as well. They include Bonnie's children, Chrystal Knudson of Brandon, SD, Daniel Miller and his wife Sue of Dassel, MN, Sharon Patterson and her husband Michael of Monument, CO, Bonnie's grandchildren and great grandchildren, Barbara Sipala and her husband Erik of Centennial, CO, Desiree Patterson and her son Ian of Monument, CO, Adam Patterson and his wife Lindie of Bonney Lake, WA, Rose Blahosky and her husband Adam and their daughter Addyson of Sioux Falls, and Dutch Knudson of Sioux Falls. Ray was preceded in death by his daughter Norma Lee Hirchert in 1985. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 2, at Kirk Funeral Home and one hour before services at the church on Friday. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 3, at South Park United Church of Christ, with the Rev. Bruce Herrboldt officiating. Burial, with military honors by VFW Post #1273 of Rapid City will follow at 2 p.m. at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
