Dorothy Pearl Haas was born October 16, 1925 in Dorchester, Nebraska to John and Rose (Kovar) Haas. She was the fourth of seven children: Irene, Don, Charles, Betty, Shirley, and Dallas. The Haas family moved to Western Nebraska when she was three years old. After graduating from Hemingford High School in 1943, she attended Beauty School where she received her Cosmetology degree. Dorothy married Louis Joseph Stumf at St. Bridget's Catholic Church in Hemingford on May 26, 1948. They made their home 20 miles west of Hemingford. Born to them were three daughters: Candis, Brenda, and Rosann, who later married John, Duane, and Kevin. Dorothy and Louis witnessed the birth of nine grandchildren: Lee John, Mitch, Tammy, Mandee, Tonya, Adam, Jackie, Brandon, and Tyler, who extended the family through marriage to Kim, Jill, Angela, and Jessica. After Louis's death in 2000, Dorothy continued to live at home on the farm but traveled frequently to visit her daughters and grandchildren who have blessed her to date with twelve great-grandchildren: Makenzie, Boston, Amanda, Shawn, Ayden, Alexander, Elijah, Joshua, Avery, Tenley, Justin, and Berkley. She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis; son-in-law, Duane; great-grandson, Ayden; parents, John and Rose; brothers, Charles and Dallas; mother- and father-in-law, Agnes and Oldrich; sisters-in-law, Evelyn, Emily, Alice, and Lucille; brothers-in-law, Fred, Chuck, Farren, Algo, and Cliff. As her family surrounded her at Regional West Medical Center on October 3, 2010, Dorothy was granted eternal life. A celebration of her life will be at St. Bridget's Catholic Church, including a Wake/Rosary on Wednesday, October 6 at 7:00 p.m. as well as a Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, October 7 at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be at Hemingford Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to the Hemingford Federal Credit Union to support Dorothy's passions.
