Bio
Thomas was the youngest of 3 born to William Manley Nelson & his first wife, Sarah Moody, who married on 5 Mar 1857 in Blount Co AL. His older full siblings were James William & Nancy Angeline Nelson. His parents divorced shortly after his birth and his father remarried to Caroline Bentley. The birth year on his marker is incorrect by at least 3 years. He was listed as 4 years in 1870 old when he is found living in Jackson Co AL with his mother in the household of her parents, Abraham Buck Moody and Nancy Jane Holden . In 1900 he told the census taker that he was born in Jun 1865 which is also more consistent with the 1870 census and the date of his father's 2nd marriage year of 1866. Most all the trees on Ancestry have misidentified his mother as a different Sarah Moody. This Sarah was the daughter of Abraham & Jane Moody as evidenced by the above information from the 1870 census, as well as being listed in their 1850 Blount Co AL household at age 9. She may have died between 1870 & 1880. In 1880 Thomas is still with his grandparents and the 3 of them are living with Abraham's nephew, William Dyer Moody , son of Abraham's older brother, Wiley Moody. The father of Thomas Fletcher Nelson, Willliam Manley Nelson, was born about 1839 in Blount Co AL and died in Arkansas in 1874. He was the son of Matthew S Nelson (1808-1860) & Leah Robbins (1816-1865). Matthew was the son of Edward Nelson Sr & Winifred Johnson. Edward was born 1759/1765 and died on 11 Jul 1839 in Blount Co AL. Contributed by Debbie Z , a Nelson descendant.
