The Winfield Daily Free Press Winfield, Kansas Friday, June 30, 1916 Page 1 Crushed To Death Under A Train Mrs. Lute Willis of Atlanta Instantly Killed at Atlanta Yesterday Evening - Ran to Rescue Her Dog. Stumbling when she ran on the Frisco tracks to rescue her little dog, Mrs. Lute Willis, of Atlanta was caught and instantly killed by a Frisco special train at Atlanta yesterday evening about six-thirty o'clock. Mrs. Willis, whose husband is employed on the Frisco, saw her pet dog in danger of being killed by the approaching train, and despite shouted warnings, ran to the track. She seemed to stumble and was hurled to the track and crushed to death. Her body was horribly mangled and her head was crushed to an unrecognizable mass. Her husband saw her go to her death, but was powerless to aid her. Lute Willis is working with a bridge gang for the Frisco and has quarters at Atlanta. The couple lived in a car near the station at Atlanta. Late yesterday after the supper hour a special train carrying officials of the road passed through. The train was not scheduled to stop at Atlanta and passed the station at a speed of about twenty miles per hour. Just north of the depot stood the line of "bunk cars," in one of which lived the Willis's. The little dog, a great favorite with Mrs. Willis, ran upon the track and stood directly in front of the approaching train. She met her death in a heroic effort to save the little animal. The body was taken to Udall today, where burial will take place, probably tomorrow. Coroner Marsh, who visited the scene of the accident, returned to Winfield late today.
