Charley Roy Kyle was born Nov 30, 1917, in Madison County to William Holman and Beulah Wlson Kyle. Charley graduated from Texas A&M College in 1940, having been Company Commander during his senior year. He was immediately commissioned into the U. S. Army as a 2nd Lt. Charley proudly served his country before, during and after World War II with tours of duty stateside, in the Philippines and in Germany. Charley received numerous medals, including Expert Marksman and the Bronze Star. He continued to serve his country after active duty in the Army Reserve until he retired with the rank of Colonel. Following his years as county clerk, he owned and operated a service station in Madisonville until his retirement. Along with other jobs, he also ran a small farm with a herd of beef cattle. And of course, he was always an Aggie fan, listening intently to the football games on his old kitchen radio and later watching all the games on TV. Charley was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church in Madisonville during his adult life. As long as his health permitted , he shared his blessings by providing many of his friends and those less fortunate with fresh fruits, vegetables and pecans from his garden.
