Dennis was only 16 years and 4 months old when war broke out at Fort Sumter, South Carolina. He enlisted but does not show up on the muster rolls until 12 Jan 1863, after he turned eighteen. He was in Company G, 20th Infantry Regiment Tennessee. It was organized on June 12, 1861, and was initially mustered into service in August of the same year. The Tennessee 20th Infantry saw action at Battle of Mill Springs, 19 Jan 1862 Battle of Shiloh, 6-7 Apr 1862 Battle of Murfreesboro, 31 Dec 1862 Battle of Chickamauga, 19-20 Sep 1863 Battle of Chattanooga, 23-25 Nov 1863 Battle of Kennesaw Mountain, 27 Jun 1864 Battle of Atlanta, 22 Jul 1864 Battle of Franklin, 30 Nov 1864 Battle of Nashville, 15-16 Dec 1864 He was captured near Nashville, Tennessee 16 Dec 1864 and 17 Feb 1865 was transferred to Point Lookout, Maryland, for exchange. Reportedly, family lore is that he met his wife on his way home from the war. He married Sarah E Lancaster, 18 May 1866, Perry County, Tennessee.
