She was born one of ten children to John T. and Willie Elizabeth (Riley) Hutchins in Maypearl. She grew up and was educated in Waxahachie schools, graduating from Waxahachie High School in 1954. She was employed with Southwestern Bell Telephone Co until her marriage to William H Scott, the father of her only child, Brooksie. She was divorced in 1969 and married again in 1976 to Milton Schwanz in Irving.
