Took off from Munda Airfield on a mission over Kahilli. This Corsair strafed barges south of Ballale Island, then flew around the northeastern side of the island passing the northern end the runway of Ballale Airfield when small arms fire and 20mm anti-aircraft opened up. Tomes' fighter exploded and crashed onto the island from a height of approximately 50'. Fellow pilots Lt. Cantrell and Lt. Rathburn both observed the crash and immediately departed for home. Flying in the vicinity five minutes later, VMF-213 pilots Captain Scott and Captain Dyer flying at 5,000' observed smoke on the ground before returning to base. Memorials Tomes was officially declared dead the day of the mission. He is memorialized on the tablets of the missing at Manila American Cemetery.
