Bio

G. L. French (1919) enlisted in the U.S. Army (S/N 6277512). He became a paratrooper and was assigned to Company C, 503rd Parachute Infantry Regiment. 16 February 1945: The 503rd Parachute Infantry Regiment jumps on Corregidor (The Rock). 20 February 1945 - Message 88 - Time 0800 Air strike being planned on pt. (39.5-40.1) at 1030 hour. Also, naval bombardment of caves in cliffs between Searchlight point and Breakwater point. "C" Company to follow naval bombardment and seal up caves with demolition. Message 90 - Time 1045 Navy strike on caves between Searchlight Point and Breakwater Point. "C" Company followed in cleaning up caves and sealing them shut by demolition. Captured a lot of Jap automatic weapons of all types and unaccounted number of dead Japs covered up by our own and their demolition. "C" Company occupied area during nite and planned to complete job 21 Feb. During the nite enemy opened up on them from caves and 4 KIA of our own troops." Source: Journal of 503d Parachute R.C. T. Corregidor, P.I. 20 February 1945 Staff Sergeant G. L. French was one of those killed. His body was brought over to Mariveles, Bataan and he was buried in the U.S.A.F Cemetery #1, Mariveles. In all 159 men from the 503rd were buried there. After the war that cemetery was closed and his remains were brought to 7747 USAF Cemetery, Manila #2, Philippine Islands – Block 2, Row 9, Grave 1119 (D-D 5774). The deceased in Manila #2 (over 11,000 American soldiers) rested there until their removal to the American Graves Registration Service Manila Mausoleum in the summer of 1948. From there, according to the wishes of his next of kin (father, Mr. Orgie W. French), Staff Sergeant G. L. French was buried in his final resting place in the 7701 Ft. McKinley Cemetery (now known as the Manila American Cemetery) – Plot G, Row 6, Grave 40.
