Albin C. Martinek, Jr. Inducted From Texas Rank ---Technical Sergeant Combat Organization: 729th Bomber Squadron 452nd Bomber U.S. Awards: Purple Heart Medal Air Medal His plane was the "Rosalie Ann II" of the 452nd 729 Sqd, and it was a B-17G #44-8201. It was shot down on January 2, 1945. Albin was killed, and the rest became POWs. From the MACR*: Shortly after bombs away (1114 hrs) A/C 201 received a direct flak hit between #3 and #4 engines, setting the #3 engine on fire eventually. The aircraft went into a spiral, and as it neared the ground it leveled off and crashed into woods at approximately 4950N-0650E, setting the woods on fire. Five to nine chutes were reported as seen to open at 10 to 12,000 feet. POW: 1st Lt -Vise, Richard George Capt --Martin, Ralph Hiller 2nd Lt Kamas, Lewis M 1st Lt -Baghner, Joseph 1st Lt -Kordatzky, Howard Walter T/Sgt -Achenbach, Donald A S/Sgt -Richardson, Clyde E 1st Lt -McDougall, William Robert KIA: T/Sgt Martinek, Albin C. Jr. The MACR stated that he reported over the intercom that he was hit before he bailed out. MACR 11257. Last seen 4940N 0650E at about 11:17 "Eight members of the crew survived (marked RTD) but the ninth, Albin C Martinek who was the Engineer and TT gunner is listed KIA. He was apparently hit by flak just before the crew bailed out. They all apparently bailed out but it is not clear if Martinek pulled his rip cord or not. Very soon after the crew landed, some of them were shown Martinek's wallet by German soldiers and asked to identify him by the pictures in the wallet.
