DeWitt County is east of San Antonio. In the 1930 census 5-year-old Richard is living with his parents at 301 Hopkins Street in Yoakum, DeWitt County, Texas. Yoakum is 90 miles east of San Antonio and 39 miles north of Victoria. His father is a carpenter for a railroad company. Brother Robert Morris Bednarz was born in 1931. Richard enlisted 10 Apr 1942 at San Antonio. His residence was in DeWitt County, Texas. He’d had 3 years of high school and was married. Russell County, Alabama, has a marriage record for a Richard B Bednarz, whose mother was Elizabeth Bailey, on 4 Oct 1943, so likely a second marriage. The 517th was formed in early 1943 and trained at Camp Toccoa, Georgia, 93 miles northeast of Atlanta. The 517th saw heavy fighting in the Italian Campaign in June 1944, before being transferred to take part in Operation Dragoon in August 1944, in Southern France, which happened to be their first combat jump. From 517prct.org: The red-letter day of the "Champagne Campaign" was September 18th when Ventebren and Tete de Lavina Viere was taken by the Second and Third Battalions with a total cost of only four casualties. The remainder of September was spent by the 517th digging defensive positions in and around Piera Cava along a thinly held fifteen-mile front, using mines and booby traps to take the place of Troopers, of which there were far too few. Piera Cava is in the Maritime Alps 22 miles north northeast of Nice. The NARA WWII casualty listings by state and county show Bednarz, Richard B, Pvt, from DeWitt County, Texas as killed in action 21 Sep 1944 so he would have been in the area of Piera Cava.
