Edith Barnhill, 86, longtime Ogallala resident, died Sunday, Feb. 22, 2009 in Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte. Edithora Lonetta Barnhill was born March 9, 1922 at Keystone, NE, the daughter of Elmer and Emma Peters DeFord. As a baby she lived with her parents on a farm north of Keystone, and then later, west of Arthur. In 1929 the family moved to Ogallala. In 1941 Edith graduated from Ogallala High School. Edith married Boyd Meredith. The couple who had a son Eugene 'Gene' Meredith, later divorced. In 1946 Edith went to work for Goodall Electric, which later became known as TRW. On July 30, 1948 Edith married Theodore E. 'Ted' Barnhill. The couple had five children. The family lived at Cheyenne, WY and Denver, CO before moving back to Ogallala. Edith resumed her job at TRW, retiring in 1987. Edith also helped her mother with a game dressing business which Edith continued to operate for many years. Edith served eight years on the Ogallala Ambulance Squad and was an emergency medical technician. She enjoyed spending time with friends at the Keith County Senior Center. Preceding her in death was her husband Ted E. Barnhill on July 4, 2003; a son Gary Barnhill on May 22, 2003; four sisters Eleanor Harvey, Geraldine March, Virginia Ziemer, and Maxine Buss; a brother Romaine DeFord; a sister-in-law Josephine Keslar; and three brothers-in-law Francis and William Barnhill and Paul Engelbrecht. Survivors include three sons: Gene Meredith, Ronald Barnhill, and Ted L. Barnhill and his wife Marcia, all of Ogallala. Two Daughters: Linda and husband Rick Weisgerber of Bennington, NE; and Teena and husband Tom Zezulka of Omaha. A stepson Eldon Barnhill of North Platte. A daughter-in-law Diane Barnhill of Ogallala. 12 grandchildren: Jeremy Meredith of Sterling, CO; Brian Barnhill, Jaret Barnhill and wife Lora; and Jason Barnhill, all of Ogallala. JoLynn Barnhill of Lawrence, KS., Jeff Weisgerber and wife Kelly of Omaha; Lisa and husband Kevin Welch, and Mark Weisgerber, all of Bennington, NE; and Sheila Zezulka, Shane Zezulka and wife Valerie, Shawna and husband PJ Biodrowski; and Shawn Zezulka and wife Jacqueline, all of Omaha. One sister Lorraine Engelbrecht of Ogallala; a sister-in-law Wilma DeFord of Grant; a brother-in-law Leo 'Ike' Barnhill of Texas. Four step-grandchildren: Lisa and husband Matt Dierks of KS., Julie Conrad of Wyoming, and Steve Barnhill, and Tonya Lynn Barnhill. 8 great-grandchildren: Jalie K. Barnhill of Ogallala; and Tyler Widman, Juliana Albergucci, Addison Biodrowski, Bailey & Blaine Welch, Ethan Zezulka, Sayhlor Zezulka, all of Omaha. Visitation will be Wednesday, February 25, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Draucker Funeral Home. Funeral Service will be Thursday, February 26, at 10 a.m. in Draucker Funeral Home. Rev. Robert Pierce of St. Johns Lutheran Church, southeast of Ogallala, will officiate. Interment in the Ogallala Cemetery. A memorial has been established to the Ogallala Ambulance Squad.
