Bio

Bio Information Received from Richard Henry Kubena, Jr., son of Mabel Naomi Tucker and Richard Henry Kubena, Sr. Gilbert was a Staff Sargent In the U.S. Army. He was the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Dols of Shakopee Minnesotta. He began his military training at Fort Snelling, April 15, 1942. Then he was sent to Camp Wallace, Texas for his basic training and then he was assigned to Camp Hulen, Texas which was just outside of Palacios, Texas. Camp Hulen was an anti-aircraft training facility and Gilbert helped train men on the operation of those weapons. It was while he was at Camp Hulen that he met my mom, Mabel Tucker at a dance on The Pavillion, a very popular pier with a dance hall and a separate restaurant. They courted for a time and then they were married November 2, 1942. When it came time for Gilbert to go overseas to prepare for the Normandy Invasion he had some leave time and he took mom to Minnesota to stay with his folks while he was gone. While there, mom worked at a factory that built crates for the bombs to be shipped in and also when she wasn't working that shift, she worked in another factory nearby that built the quantum huts for the troops to stay in. Gilbert reached England in February 1944, and he prepared for the June 6 invasion of France. Throughout the campaign across France, with the Normandy invasion, the battle of the hedgerows and the battle of the bulge, he escaped unhurt. He was in the Netherlands when he was fatally wounded. By that time, Germany was near defeat and four days later, the Nazi high command surrendered. He had told mom that if anything happened to him that he wanted to be buried where he died. The Netherlands American Military Cemetery outside of Margraten, Netherlands was a battlefield cemetery during the war and afterwards it was made into a national cemetery. His unit was the 460th Anti-Aircraft Arty, (Automatic Weapons) Battalion (Mobile). This unit was attached to the 1st Infantry Division "The Big Red One". This was the division that the movie "The Big Red One" was made about. I have complete information on the cemetery and it's location and care complete with photos. It is a very beautiful resting place for our servicemen and women that paid the supreme sacrifice. I intend to one day to go to the Netherlands to visit Gilbert's grave, and meet the folks from Margraten that tend to it. Several of the townsfolk pick a grave to tend to all year out of respect to the servicemen and women for their sacrifice for the Netherlands and France. I do not believe that any family member has paid a visit to his grave. President Bush was the first and only President to give an eulogy there just a few years ago. Besides his parents and mom and daughter Margaret (Margie) Gilbert had four sisters, three that I have names of, Dorothy, Dolora and Sister Gertrude at St. Mary's Parish in Shakopee. I have pictures of Gilbert and he was a very handsome young man of German decent. When Gilbert was killed my mom's parents took his death hard, they loved him very much. ~~~~~~~~~~~~O~~~~~~~~~~~~ World War II and Korean Conflict Veterans Interred Overseas Name: Gilbert M Dols Inducted From: Minnesota Rank: Technician Grade Three Combat Organization: 460th Antiaircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion Death Date: 4 May 1945 Monument: the Netherlands Last Known Status: Buried U.S. Awards: Bronze Star Medal
