Service ID: O-1012745 Scout, 9th Armored Division, 89th Cavalry Reconnaisance Squadron Entered the service from Oklahoma. Purple Heart Richard J. Cleaver (father) Hallie E. Cleaver (mother) Enlisted 6 March 1941 - Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. A graduate of Altus high school. Lt. Cleaver resided here until he entered service. He was a scout in a tank reconnaissance corps. He had been overseas six months. On March 7, 1945, elements of the 9th Armored Division moved quickly and helped to capture the Ludendorff Bridge over the Rhine River at the city of Remagen . The bridge was rigged with explosive charges by the Germans to destroy the bridge. Many brave American soldiers darted all along the bridge, cutting the wires from the charges and throwing the charges into the Rhine River below. One huge blast did damage the western entry point of the bridge but it was repairable. During the Battle of the Bulge, the division also saw heavy fighting, particularly in St. Vith, Echternach, and Bastogne.
