The death of Carl Horton Knowles leaves but one member of a family of five alive. The parents and three children were residents of Emerson and vicinity in past years. The subject of this sketch won friends wherever chanced to be his home. He was a respected citizen, true friend, and a quiet Christian gentleman. Carl Horton Knowles was born in Knoxville, la., March 29, 1865, and departed this life at his home in Fullerton, Neb., November 12, 1919. At the age of 12 years he came with his parents to Emerson, where he grew to manhood. On July 29, 1888, he was united in marriage with Miss Alice Catherine Lang. For two years following their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Knowles lived at Emerson; for the next nine years they lived at Fullerton, Neb., then moved to Craig, Neb., where they lived nine years; for eight years thereafter Scotts Bluffs was their home. For one year they lived in southern Kansas in hope that the climate would be of benefit to Mr. Knowles. Seven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Knowles, two of whom died in infancy. The living children are Nina, Lenore, Ray and Frank of Fullerton and Clinton of Dubois, Wyo. Besides wife and children there remains of his family a brother, Munson Knowles, of Fullerton. His parents and his sister died at Craig, Neb., and are burled there. Mr. and Mrs. Knowles were members of the Presbyterian church of Fullerton, having joined that church while living in Scotts Bluffs. Funeral services were held at Fullerton Saturday, November 15, conducted by his pastor, Rev. Honsaker. The body was brought, to Emerson the next day and services were held from the M. E. church, conducted by Rev. Doyle. Interment was in the Emerson cemetery. Those present at the funeral from a distance were the wife and daughters, Nina and Lenore, and son Frank, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Knowles, Mr. and Mrs. Munson Knowles, all of Fullerton, and Clinton Knowles of Dubots, Wyoming.
