Bio

Lydvina Susana Hoffbauer 'Vena', was the eighth of at least 10 children born to Karl 'Charles' and Anna (Vogelbaugh) Hoffbauer. Her father came over from Germany in 1948 at the age of 6 with his parents and four siblings. The Hoffbauer family initially settled in Watertown, Wisconsin, but eventually found their way to Buffalo, Iowa where Vena's father grew up. Vena's grandfather established Hoffbauer's Brewery in Buffalo in 1864, and his son Charles (Vena's father) followed in his footsteps becoming a saloon keeper. In 1861 Charles Hoffbauer enlisted in the Union Army out of Buffalo and remained in service until his discharge in 1964. Three years later, 1867 he married Anna Vogelbaugh, daughter of John Vogelbaugh and Margareth Shaefer, both of whom were born in Germany. Anna Vogelbaugh was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, the third of 7 children. By 1856, when Anna was only 4, her family migrated to Buffalo, Ohio where she grew up. It was there in Buffalo, at the age of 15, that she met and married Vena's father, Charles Hoffbauer. Charles and Anna Hoffbauer had at least 10 children, including Vena, all born in Buffalo, Iowa. In 1889, Vena's father was admitted to the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. Records show he suffered from kidney disease. It appears the entire family moved to Wauwatosa at that time. By 1892 however, Vena's mother had remarried. With her 2nd husband, Lewis Foster, Vena's mother had two sons, Lawrence (who was put up for adoption) and August. Following their mother's remarriage, Vena and her siblings were split up. Vena's two oldest sisters Gertrude and Fannie were married (Gertrude was living in Montana and Fannie was in Kansas). Vena's older brother Charles Joseph, who was 20, stayed in Wauwatosa, where two years later in 1894, he married Rose Lewis. Vena's older sister Cate had died in 1892. Her older sister Virginia ('Jennie'), who was married and living with her husband in Wauwatosa, took in Vena's older brother Frederick and sister Minnie. Vena went to live with her grandfather John Vogelbaugh in Buffalo. Her next youngest brother Benjamin went to live in Billings, Montana with his older sister Gertrude and her husband Thomas Healy. Vena's youngest brother Charles went to live with his mother and her new husband in Wauwatosa. Vena's mother went on to marry two more times, but had no more children. She died as Anna Wagner on Oct 8, 1912 and was buried at Calvary Cemetery in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Vena's father, Charles Hoffbauer died the previous year, on Jan 14, 1911, in the Soldier's home in Wauwatosa, Michigan, and was buried with military honors in Wood National Cemetery in Milwaukee. Like her mother, Vena married four times, however Vena never had any children. On Sep 21, 1904, Vena first married John Paarmann in Scott County, Iowa. By May of 1908, they were divorced, and in November of that same year, Vena married Clarence A Baker of Kalamazoo, Michigan. By 1914, that marriage also ended in divorce, and in Dec of 1916, Vena married a third time, this time with Anthony G Cassutt in Great Falls, Montana. Vena and Anthony moved to Tacoma Washington the following year where Anthony ran a store selling phonographs and phonograph records. By 1922, Vena and Anthony had moved to Seattle, where Anthony and his brother Thomas tried their hand as jewelers. Soon after that, Vena and Anthony were divorced. It was in Seattle that Vena met her fourth husband Frank E Corbaley. Frank was working as a mechanic and living with his cousin. Vena and Frank headed down to Napa Valley in California where Frank's brother owned an automobile dealership, and there in St. Helena, on Jun 29, 1926, the two were married. The following year, Vena and Frank moved to Honolulu, Hawaii, where they lived together until at least 1930. Sometime after 1930, Vena and Frank separated, and by 1944, Vena had moved back to Montana, where she found work in the lobby of a hotel in Billings. After her mother died in 1912, Vena's half-brother August Foster, who was 14, moved in with Vena's widowed sister Jennie Koepke. Jennie lived in Milwaukee with her two children Ray and Virginia. Ray and Virginia both married and remained in Milwaukee (Virginia became Virginia Boyer) . About 1935, however, Jennie moved with August to Watersmeet, Michigan, where they remained until Jennie's death in 1950. Jennie's body was returned to Milwaukee where she was buried in Calvary Cemetery. August remained in Watersmeet. Vena moved to Watersmeet about the time of her sister's death, around 1950, Eventually she became the proprietor of a gas station in Watersmeet. In January of 1958, Vena fell ill and was admitted to a hospital in nearby Ironwood, Michigan. She died there on Feb 9, 1958. Her body was returned to Milwaukee where she was buried in Valhalla Memorial Park. In addition to her half-brother August in Watersmeet, and her niece and nephew Ray Koepke and Virginia Boyer in Milwaukee, Vena was survived by only one of her siblings, Helen (Hoffbauer) Becker who lived in Camp Douglas, Wisconsin. Helen's husband died in in 1960, and she remarried that same year, becoming Helen Slater. Helen Slater died in Wisconsin in 1976 and was buried in Pine Grove Cemetery in Norway Ridge, Wisconsin.
