Spouse: Myrtle Parents: Amos A. Whelchel & Lue A. Whelchel, Walter, died at 4:45 a.m., Feb. 23, 1918, Citizen's mine, Springfield, IL. Death begin due to accident. The deceased is survived by a wife and two children of Kalo, Iowa. IL State Register, Springfield, IL, 2-24-1918 State mining officials, under the direction of the department of mines and minerals have been instructed to conduct a rigid investigation to determine the cause of the death of eight miners, who lost their lives in the Springfield district within twenty-four hours. Four Springfield miners lost their lives in a blast at Mine A, of the Citizen's Coal company, a mile and a half west of this city at 3:30 o'clock yesterday morning. The Springfield miners who were killed are: Thomas Reilly, Ray Marshall Hiner, Ernest Leland Cox, and Walter Whelchel, Kalo Iowa. Shortly before the men lost their lives, Ray Hiner, night foreman, was told by shot firers that there was a derailed car in the last room on the east part of the entry. They stated that no shots had been fired in the room because they feared it would wreck the car. They had attempted to put the car back on the rails but had failed. Hiner and the other men took a mule to the place and succeeded in putting the car on the track. They touched off the fuses to the charge of powder when a moment later they were buried beneath the wreckage. When the rescue squad came upon the bodies of the workers, they were many yards from the place where the shots were fired. The body of Waler Whelchel of Kalo, Iowa, was forwarded yesterday to that place for burial. IL State Journal, Springfield, IL 2-24-1918
