Bio

Velma Alice Coplin Smith died Nov. 1, 1999 in Oklahoma City. She was born Jan. 4, 1906 near Fort Worth, Texas, and began working at the Kress 5 & 10 store in Ft. Worth at the age of 15. It was at the Kress store in 1927 she met her late husband, Carl Clayton Smith, who worked as an architect for the company. He preceded her in death in 1972. She and her husband lived in cities across the United States, including Portland, Oregon; Billings, Montana; Mount Vernon, Washington; San Diego, California; Daytona Beach, Florida; and New York City. They moved to Oklahoma City in 1945. Velma worked for the City of Oklahoma City as an account clerk from 1948 to 1971. She loved traveling and took trips to Europe, the Orient and the Holy Land. One of Velma'sgreatest joys was greeting the children at the "Hospitality Desk" at First Baptist Church, Oklahoma City, where she has been a member since 1945. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Mary Alyce and John Merow, New York, NY; a granddaughter andher husband, Alison and Athan Manuel, and two great-grandchildren, Ariadne and Evan, Washington, DC; and a sister, Dessie Ola Randolph, Austin, Texas. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Ellen Merow, and a brother, Charles Edward Coplin. She also leaves be hind many special friends, including Bill, Paula, Elizabeth and Allison Bowles, and many others who cared for her during recent illnesses. She was a member of the DN Chapter of PEO, Congenial Dinner Club, Red Bud Women's Club, Aquarius Book Club, Criterion Book Club, Reviewer's Coterie Book Club, Eastern Star (50-year member), Daughters of the Nile and American Association of Retired Persons. Velma loved life and was grateful for all of life's gifts, especially her Heavenly Father, whoshe said "has given us strength and courage ... and loved us even when we did not deserve to be loved." ~~~~~ Social Security Claims Index stating parents are George and Pearl (Rodgers) Coplin.
