Bio

Barbara Kathryn Ball Metcalfe, 83, of College Station passed away on June 19, 2007 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Bryan. She was born on October 8, 1923, in Houston. She was a graduate of Giddings High School and earned Bachelors and Masters Degrees from Lamar University, Beaumont, graduating with honors. For twenty-eight years Barbara served the Port Neches ISD as an elementary teacher and as a special education supervisor. She was an extraordinary teacher who combined challenge with compassion and fun with structure. Softball games in high heels and evening gowns on Dress-Up Day were as much a part of her approach to teaching as were rocket launches and multiplication tables. Barbara was greatly loved by her students and she worked untiringly for them, particularly those with special needs and problems. She was the kind of teacher every parent prays their child will have. Barbara was a member of the Methodist Church. She lived the tenets of her faith every day. Every student, neighbor or friend she ever had received her special attention. Her kindnesses came whether the occasion called only for the daily pleasantries or whether life-challenging issues required exhausting efforts to resolve, Barbara was there. Her neighbors referred to her as "The Matriarch of Chimney Hill" because of her unfailingly cheerful attention to friends and strangers alike. She could be found caring for the pets of ill or out of town neighbors, tutoring struggling students, furnishing cold drinks to the lawn care crew, finding medical services for those unable to undertake the task, befriending the recent bereaved, going kayaking with friends at age 81 or leading neighborhood children on a night-time "bug patrol". Barbara was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 46 years, Joseph F. Metcalfe, Jr., her mother Ethel Cook and by her adoptive parents, Warren and Hattie Ball of Giddings. She is survived by her son, Joseph F. Metcalfe, III of College Station and by innumerable friends, neighbors, professional colleagues and former students. Barbara was a member of the Brazos Valley Retired School Personal organization. An appropriate memorial to her would be a donation to the scholarship fund of BVRSP which may be sent to BVRSP, P.O. Box 6693, Bryan, TX 77805. An even more appropriate remembrance of Barbara would be to actively seek out a child or an elderly person with a pressing need and sacrifice time and effort to the meeting of that need. That is the way Barbara spent every day of her life. Hillier Funeral Home proudly served the family of Mrs. Metcalfe in their time of need. Funeral arrangements will be private.
