Bio

Thomas O. "Archie" Barrett, 86, of Hiawatha, died Monday afternoon, April 5, 2004, at Maple Heights Nursing home in Hiawatha. He was born at Surgoinsville, Tenn., September 23, 1917. the son of Roy and Effie Darter Barrett and moved with his parents to Kansas at an early age where the family settled at White Cloud. They later moved to Ellensburg, WA., where he later graduated from high school with the class of 1937. Archie worked for the local lumber mill for a year before returning to Kansas. He served with the US Navy on the USS Saratoga and other carriers during World War II, for an enlistment period of 6 years, discharged in 1947, at the rank of chief petty officer. After discharge from the service, Archie worked for 13 years for the A&P Grocery store in Hiawatha; and for 12 years as a real estate agent before retiring in the early 1970's. He has been a resident of Maple Heights Nursing Home since May 1997. Mr. Barrett was a member of the Upper Wolf Lutheran Church, southeast of Robinson; also a member of the VFW Post #5210, of Hiawatha. He was married to Ella Oltjen, May of 1943, at San Diego, California. They have made their home in Hiawatha for many years. She survives of the home. Also surviving are a daughter Margaret Ann Bleeker of Fort Collins, Colorado; son John Thomas Barrett of Anchorage, Alaska; two sisters Myrtle Warner of Seattle, Washington Laveta Thomas of Ellensburg, Washington 6 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren Archie was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers Kenneth Barrett, Roy Barrett; two sisters Cora Hobright and Alva Lasker Mr. Barrett donated his body to University of Kansas Medical School. Memorial services are planned for 11 a.m. Saturday, April 24, at the Upper Wolf Lutheran Church southeast of Robinson. Pastor Dick Reumann will officiate. Inurnment will be at a later date at the Church cemetery nearby.
