Lester Earl Schneringer died at the age of 86 at Avera Prince of Peace Hospice in Sioux Falls, S.D., on July 11. Lester served his country for 20 years in the Army Air Corps and the United States Air Force, and was a veteran of WWII and Korea. Lester was born Oct. 13, 1923, in Westwood, Calif., to Herman Schneringer and Ardis Mahoney Schneringer of Bushnell, Neb. In 1941, the day after Pearl Harbor, Les joined the Army Air Corps and became a pilot. In 1945, he married Pauline Hoke Gibson. Les and Pauline were married for 61 years, until her death in 2006. Through the years, they lived all over the world and enjoyed traveling, even after retirement, visiting family and staying in touch with the friends they made during their years in the military, and never missing a reunion of Les' old unit. After his family, Les' big love was talking politics. He became a Republican in the 1960s, and never missed an opportunity to defend his country and his conservative values. He was also a big sports fan, especially of any California team. The dawn of every new NFL season would bring this from Les, "I gotta believe it's gonna be the Raiders and the 49ers this year." Les is survived by a brother, Kenneth Schneringer of Sacramento, Calif.; four children, Cecilia Schneider of Denver, Paulette (Mrs. Neil) Jones of Jacksonville, Fla., Gregory Schneringer of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Kendall Schneringer, of Los Lunas; eight grandchildren, Kevin Andersh, of Albuquerque, Niki Andersh, of Albuquerque, Kim (Mrs. Vance) Hall of Trinidad, Colo., Katie (Mrs. James) Valentine, of Ft. Leavenworth, Kan., Greg Schneringer, Jr., of Chico, Calif., Matt Schneringer of Nevada, Mo., Byron Schneringer of Normal, Ill., Natasha Schneringer of Seattle, Wash.; 19 great-grandchildren; a nephew and two nieces. Lester was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline; and a grandson, Jeff Schneider of Kimball, Neb. Lester will be interred with full military honors at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe later this month. A full obit and register book can be seen at www.heritagesfsd.com.
