Bio
I am the Great Granddaughter of Minora Plumley Best Kluna. Family account: Following the untimely death of her first husband, Lafayette Benedict Best in 1888, Nora married a dairy farmer, Joseph Kluna, in 1891 in Austin, Texas. Her only child was George William Best, who was about 11 months old when his father, Mr. Best, died. Nora promptly had four children by Mr. Kluna, in 1892, 1893, 1894, and 1895, and as of the 1900 U.S. Census, George was living with an aunt and uncle in Travis County, Texas (the aunt was Sara "Sallie" Plumley Boston, and was childless, so it was probably deemed best to send little George to live with her rather than the crowded Kluna household with his mother, stepfather, and 4 young childen). I was personally told by one of Nora's grandsons, Mr. Oliver Dee Kluna, Sr. that Nora's cause of death was accidental -- crushed by a dairy cow as she was helping bring the cows into the barn at night. Mr. Kluna had been told that she was 8 or 9 months pregnant at the time and that the unborn infant also died. Minora "Nora" Plumley and Lafayette Benedict Best were my great grandparents, and I am seeking (1) the cause of Lafayette's death, and (2) a photo or portrait of him. I believe that someone in the descendants of Lafayette's many older siblings (he was the youngest) must have such a photo. As to the cause of Lafayette's death, I only know that he was at the time a foreman of a crew employed by the Texas Prison System to quarry limestone rocks, near his Travis County farm, for use in the building of the State Capitol, and I would like to know if his death was from an on-the-job injury, illness, or what!
