Bio

Richard Lewis Ely, jr., the son of Richard L. and Emeline Weesner Ely, was born Aug. 20, 1942, at Omaha. He died Wednesday, June 15, at his home in Golden, Colo., at the age of 45 years. He had been ill for the past six months with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or Lou Gehrig's disease. Ely grew up in the Guide Rock community and was a graduate of the Guide Rock High School. He was a veteran of the United States Navy. Ely was the president and owner of Denver Aviation Insurance, as well as flying as a corporate pilot for International Jet, both of Denver. He was a member of the Guide Rock Baptist Church, the Guide Rock Masonic Lodge, No. 128, A.F. and A.M., the Tehama Shrine Temple in Hastings and was actively involved with the Wagin Heels Square Dance group in Arvada, Colo. He was also a caller for many square dances. Survivors are his wife, Marlos; two daughters, Mrs. John Coats (Renee) of Juniata and Robin Hurd of Hastings; two step-sons, Mark McNichols of Arvada, Colo., and Bret McNichols of Golden, Colo.; his parents, Richard and Emeline Ely, Guide Rock; three grandchildren, Ashley Coats of Juniata and Ryan and Jessica McNichols of Arvada; two brothers, Rodney Ely of Guide Rock and Keith Ely of Bonham, Texas; and many other relatives. The funeral was Monday, June 20, at 11 a.m., in the Guide Rock United Methodist Church with the Rev. Shirley Carpenter and the Rev. Linden Kirby officiating. Burial was in the Guide Rock Cemetery.
