Bio

Pierce County Call; Pierce Nebraska; 25 January 1895 Met Death in a Well! News was brought to town Tuesday forenoon that while assisting a neighbor to dig a well that forenoon, Henry Carstens, a young farmer living six miles east of Pierce, had been buried by the well caving in. It seems that the well had been put down to the depth of some nineteen feet, and a curb had been made to put in the well but was bout two feet to long. Young Carstens was cautioned on the dangers of going down again until the curb had been put in, but concluded to risk it and dig out the other two feel before lowering the curb. He had only hoisted one or two buckets of dirt when the terrible catastrophe came, covering him with about ten feet of earth and, of course, soon suffocating him. Dr. Alden immediately went to the scene of the accident but as the young man had been buried for several hours there was no hopes of resuscitation and nothing could be done. The body was found in a standing position with knees slightly bent forward from the weight of the dirt. One hand was raised to his face as if I the act of warding off the danger from above. It is supposed the unfortunate man lost consciousness in a couple of minutes after the earth fell upon him. The deceased was only married about two years and leaves a heart broken wife and one child to mourn this terrible calamity. He was about twenty-eight years of age and an industrious, sober and honest young man. His disposition was always happy and pleasant and he had many friends throughout the county. Funeral services were held by Rev. Bendin yesterday at the German Lutheran church. Providence seems to be speaking to the people of Pierce county in an awful manner. Five violent or accidental deaths in the past six months in and near Pierce is a fearful record.
