John was the eldest son of Edward York who died 1817 in Nash County, North Carolina, and his first wife, Letty Doughty. Edward York's wife at the time of his death, Judith (Moore) Taylor, was not the mother of his children. She was nee' Moore and the widow of John Flowers who died 1806 in Nash County. John York was married first to Sarah Hammonds, who was mother of his children, and later Delilah (Barnes) York; maternal aunt of two of his children's spouses (i.e., Henry Jordan Barnes and Jerusha Barnes). John was born in Maryland (probably Charles County) and his father removed to North Carolina, settling in Nash County by 1790. John lived for a time in Franklin County, North Carolina, and later removed to Gibson County, Tennessee before a move to Choctaw County, Mississippi, and finally to Leake County, Mississippi where he died in 1861. He named his four children Elizabeth Cribbs, Edward York, Eaton H. York, and Martha (York) (Quinn) Barnes in his will, along with Martha's children, Sarah and James Quinn. His wife, Delilah, was not named. Presumably, she died before the will was written.
