Harold Ray "HR" Scott, Jr. At 6:15 p.m., Wednesday, the 23rd of June 2010, Harold Ray "HR" Scott, Jr., was called Home to stand tall with our Lord and Savior, after a brief, yet very aggressive and courageous battle, with cancer. He peacefully passed at Midland Memorial Hospital while surrounded by his lovingly devoted wife of 27 years, Sharon, and a small army of adoring family and friends. Born on 24 September 1943 in Lamesa, Texas to Alta "Mama Nell" & HR "Papa Ray" Scott, Sr., both preceding him in death in 1998, Harold grew up in Big Spring. He was drafted into the U.S. Army on 24 February 1964 and was awarded the Purple Heart & the Bronze Star, with "V" device for heroic actions during combat operations while serving in Vietnam in 1967-68. He was honorably discharged in 1978, and re-entered the Army in 1983, joining the 49th Armored Division, Texas Army National Guard, in Midland. In the early 80's, Harold started work for the U.S. Postal Service as a Letter Carrier. A double-retiree, he retired from the U.S. Army National Guard, with 22 years combined service, on 1 June 1992; and from the U.S. Postal Service in December of 2003. At the time of his death he was employed by the Securitas Security Service as the Area Manager & Head of Security for the AT&T Call Center, in Midland. Harold is survived by his wife, Sharon, in Midland; his brother and brother's wife, Ricky and Charlotte, of Big Spring; his children & spouses: Sheryl Crenwelge (46) of Montgeomery, AL; KC (46) & Dodie Caulder of Odessa; Tak Ledbetter (42) of Waco; Robert (41) & Marla Scott of Midland; William (39) & Sheila Scott of Midland; & Darby (37) & Cathy Ledbetter of Nashville, TN; 14 Grandchildren; and 7 Great-Grandchildren. Harold was a quiet, simple, and humble warrior, with a fantastic sense of humor - right to the very end. He faced his final days with heroic faith and trust in his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Without hesitation. Without remorse. Without fear. Always a leader of men, he went out of his way to appear to be hard as steel. But in reality, he was as soft and gentle a person as anyone could ever know. His priorities were simple, yet full of resolve: God, Family, and Country. Without apology, this was the mantra under which he raised all of his children. With duty as his watchword, Harold Scott exemplified a, now-a-days fleeting, essence of faithful spirituality and dutiful patriotism that was once the norm, but is now seldom seen, yet yearned for so deeply by those who remember it. He is, and always will be, an icon of all the things a steadfast, fearless leader should be. He will be missed. He will be remembered. He will not be forgotten. Graveside services will be held Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at Gladewater Memorial Park, in Gladewater, Texas. Published in the Midland Reporter-Telegram on 6/26/2010
