Bio

Ollie Brown, son of Ollie D. Brown and Versia Sapp Brown of Waller Texas. He attended the University of Texas at Austin, where he earned his Bachelor's and Law degrees. It was there he met and married his wife of 60 years, Margaret Campbell. At UT, Ollie was a student waiter at the Scottish Rite Dorm. The friendships he made during those years endured throughout his life. Each September, Ollie and Margaret hosted a "Dark Horse" reunion. Ollie was proud to be in this exclusive club of men. A Life Member of the UT Ex-Students' Association, Ollie was an avid supporter all things UT. Hook em Horns!Ollie served two years active duty in the Judge Advocate General's Corps in Salzburg, Austria, followed by 25 years in the Army Reserve, and retired with the rank of Lt. Colonel. He was honored to command the fine men of the 2nd JAG Detachment. Still proud, still serving, still saluting.Ollie's career in the oil and gas business spanned 40 years. As a Landman and Attorney, he worked for Hawkins & Hawkins and Freeport McMoRan. Along the way, Ollie guided the remaking of a Hawkins subsidiary in Joplin, Missouri into Doane Products, one of the world's largest private-label manufacturers of dried feed. Ollie and Margaret raised their five children in New Orleans, where he was active in business and community affairs. He served as President of the Petroleum Club, as Treasurer and Board Member of Isidore Newman School, and was a member of the "LBC" who lunched at Galatoire's Table 22 every Friday. In retirement, Ollie and Margaret moved to Kerrville, Texas. Ollie took up golf with the enthusiasm reserved for new converts, and it brought him equal parts of joy and grief, even the last week of his life. Always civically active, Ollie served as a Board Member of the Museum of Western Art, as President of Riverhill Country Club and Homeowners Association, and as a Kerrville City Council Member. An enthusiastic history buff, Ollie found cherished friends among old adversaries who faced each other on June 6, 1944. Though too young to be there himself, he celebrated those who fought in that desperate struggle. When friend, Stephen Ambrose, had a dream to honor these men, he asked Ollie to join him. Together they worked tirelessly to found and fund the National WWII Museum in New Orleans. One of Ollie's greatest gifts was his capacity to make and maintain friendships. Though there are too many to name, you know who you are. The "Last Man Standing" torch has officially been passed. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Campbell Brown, five children: Steven Brown, Katharine Neary, Caroline Compton, Worley Brown and Warren Brown, their respective spouses and ten grandchildren. Services were held at First United Methodist Church of Kerrville on Monday, June 28, 2010 at 10 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made "In memory of Ollie Brown" to either: the National WWII Museum, 945 Magazine Street, New Orleans, LA 70130 or the Museum of Western Art, P.O. Box 29430, Kerrville, Texas 78029.The family invites you to send condolences at www.grimesfuneralchapels.com by selecting the "Send Condolences" link.
