Ray was...a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School in Dallas and the University of Texas at Austin where he was a four-year letterman on the track team. After receiving his BBA in 1952, Ray served with the U.S. Army in Korea and again during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was retired from the Texas National Guard after over 30 years' service. Ray Marek began his business career in the insurance industry in Dallas in 1955, and moved to Austin in 1974 to work with the State Board of Insurance from which he retired in 1992. Ray was a member of Gethsemane Lutheran Church where he served on the Endowment Fund Committee. He was a loyal member of the University Optimist Club which honored him with a Life Membership in Optimist International. He belonged to the Longhorn Foundation and the University of Texas Track and Field Officials Association, having earned a 20-year award for officiating at the Texas Relays.
