Hazel Mae (Rouse) Vandegrift, 87, of Stromsburg, was born to Horace and Beatrice (Winchell) Rouse on the family farm 17 miles north of O'Neill on Aug. 21, 1922. She passed June 19, 2010, at the Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg. Hazel attended country school in the O'Neill area through 8th grade and at age 12 left home to work for her room and board so she could attend high school. Hazel graduated from O'Neill High School at age 16 in 1938. Hazel was united in marriage to Robert (Bob) Vandegrift Feb. 14, 1942, in Ewing. Because of his work as a telegrapher and with the railroad, he took temporary jobs that took them to Darr, Shelton, and Enola. In October 1942 they settled in Raymond where they built their home from an old war barracks they disassembled. While in Raymond, Hazel was employed for four years at Goodyear in Lincoln making puncture-proof gas tanks. They moved to Stromsburg in 1955 when Bob took the position as the Union Pacific Railroad depot agent. In 1962 Hazel accepted a position at the Polk County Rural Public Power District in Stromsburg where she worked for 12 years until she retired in 1984. Hazel was a member of the Stromsburg United Methodist Church and served for a time as church treasurer and was a member of the United Methodist Women's Club. Hazel enjoyed traveling with her husband and friends and always appreciated her good neighbors. Fridays at the Senior Center with friends and some card playing were a highlight and something she truly looked forward to. Hazel's kind heart always made people feel welcomed and accepted. She was an amazing cook, caring friend, and wonderful grandma! She looked forward to vacations where she could see new scenery and learn about the history of the area while sampling any unique foods. Hazel loved to go places and spend time with people and had an amazing memory for names, dates and details. Hazel was preceded in death by her parents, Horace and Beatrice Rouse; mother-in-law and husband, Bertha and Walter Fisher; her husband, Bob Vandegrift; her sister, Rose Willard and her husband, Wilbur Willard, and their daughters, Karen and Rhonda Willard; her brother, Bernard Rouse; her sister-in-law and husband, Letha and Clinton Bahensky; her brothers-in-law, Roy Wike, Evans (Lois) Vandegrift, Howard (Lillian) Vandegrift and sisters-in-law, Neva (Vandegrift) White and Beth (Vandegrift) Bierhaus.
