Newton moved from Alabama to Red River County, Texas with his mother and four siblings sometime prior to 1850. It has never been established who his father was. Newton served in the Confederate Army from August, 1861 to July, 1865. He and Ella were married in Houston, Harris County, Texas on December 20, 1871, and settled on a 176-acre farm 12 miles south of Iola in Grimes County, Texas. Their ten children were born there. Newton died on the farm three years after the last child was born. Ella eventually left Grimes County with the children still at home, relocating to Jack and Knox counties before settling near Tahoka, Lynn County, Texas.
