Craig was the son of Leonard S. Whatley and Henryetta Wommack Whatley Whitehill. Craig was born in Texarkana and moved to Dallas in his childhood. He attended high school at Monroe, Louisiana. Craig was a veteran of World War II. He was a member of the 82nd Airborne Division and actively participated in the liberation of Holland and the Battle of Bulge. He received battle wounds for which he was awarded the Purple Heart. Craig was married and had been a resident of Dallas for five years before his death after a short illness. He was business manager of the C&M Construction Company. Prior to moving to Dallas he had been employed in Beaumont. Another Find A Grave contributor sent the following information from the obituary published in The Dallas Morning News on October 20, 1957: "Surviving are his wife, two stepchildren, Peggy Smith and Mark Shattuck, his father L. S. Whatley of Shreveport, his mother, Mrs. Henrietta Whitehall of Dallas, a sister, Miss Virginia Lee Whatley of Houston, a brother, L. R. Whatley of Dallas, and a grandfather, R. H. Wommack of Marietta, Cass County."
