CPL US MARINE CORPS KOREA ________________________________________ Donald Charles Bernt - Military information Branch of Service: Marine Corp Rank: E-4 Corporal Date of Service: October 2, 1951 to October, 1953 Basic Training: San Diego, CA for Marine Corp Basic training Special Duties Assigned: Motor Transport Mechanic Decorations: United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Medal and National Defense Service Medal. On September 10, 1951 he married Vita Marie Weichman and on October 2, 1951 Don reported to Omaha for active duty due to the draft. Don traveled from Omaha to San Diego, CA for Marine Corp Basic training. Don was assigned to the 2nd Battalion 2nd Infantry Regiment Transport Company 2. Part of Dons training was in the snow covered mountains of California to get acclimated to Koreas weather. After basic, Don was deployed to Korea and assigned as motor transport mechanic. In August 1952, Dons mother Amelia, died from a stroke and Don was unable to return home for the funeral. In September 1953 Don received orders to transfer to Station Maintenance Squadron-1 Marine Corp Air Station, El Toro, Santa Ana, CA.
