DAISY E. BATES, age 84, of Monticello, Kentucky passed away Saturday, July 18, 1998 at McCreary County Health Care Facility. She was born in Albany, Kentucky on June 10, 1914, the daughter of Sam Melton and Mary India Scott Melton. Both parents preceded her in death. She married James Bates, who preceded her in death. She is survived by 11 children: Danny Bates, Sammie Bates, James Bates, Charles Bates, Tom Bates, Mary Upchurch, all of Monticello, Kentucky, Josephine Kellogg of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Thelma Lovell, Nancy Bates, both of Monticello, Kentucky, Edith Wesley of Munice, Indiana, and Shirley Lundy of Elwood, Indiana; 26 grandchildren; 33 great grandchildren; and 1 sister Estel Christopher. Preceding her in death are 2 sons Bill Bates and Bobby Lee Bates; 1 brother Willie Sam Melton; and six sisters Pearl Melton, Allene Melton, Hattie York, Ruby Bates, Jewell Phillips, and Pauline Willen. She was a member of Steubensville Baptist Church. Funeral services were held Monday, July 20, 1998 at 2 P.M. in the funeral home chapel with Brother Hoyt Abbott officiating. Burial was in Dodson Cemetery. Marvin S. Hicks Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
