Vernon T. "Jerry" Wade was born on December 21, 1925 at Emory, Texas to Quillie and Fannie Gowins Wade. He was one of six children; his siblings were Leon, Ruby Wade Carnes, Estel Wade, Annie Wade Johnson and Jimmy "Jim" Wayne Wade. The family lived in the Dunbar community and Jerry attended Dunbar School through the 8th grade. He married Nina Lee Latham on December 29,1944. They had three children: Floyd Gene Wade, Nancy Ruth Wade Fenter and Tommy Dean Wade. He was drafted and was on active duty with the United States Army on February 27, 1945. The final leg of his duty in Japan was spent in Osaka, south of Tokyo at the 376 Station Hospital. While in Osaka, he was assigned to the bakery in the hospital. He learned to bake cakes while on duty in the bakery. His son Floyd Gene Wade was named after his Army buddy, Gene Rose. On December 4, 1946 he was discharged at Fort Sam Houston with rank of Technician Fifth Grade. For his service to his country, he was awarded: Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, Sharpshooter Ribbon, Army of Occupation Ribbon, Victory Ribbon and Overseas Service Badge. He owned and operated Wade's Welding until he retired and turned the buisness over to his son Floyd Gene Wade.
