Grand Island (Nebraska) Daily Independent Friday, 7 September 1923, page 2 OVERLAND FREIGHTER AT OMAHA PASSES AWAY Omaha, Sept. 7 - Joshua P. Brown, 81, Nebraska pioneer, died Thursday at the family residence, 3111 Willett street, Florence, following a recent stroke of paralysis. He had been in failing health for several months. He is survived by his wife, two sons, Frank P. and Roy C., of Omaha, and one daughter, Mrs. W. J. Pinkerton, Valparaiso, Ind. Mr. Brown was on of the few surviving pioneers who freighted across the plains in the early days. Coming to Nebraska in 1863, he entered the employ of John A. Creighton as a freighter, and in this capacity had numerous narrow escapes from Indians. He missed the Plum Creek massacre, near Fort Kearney by a few hours, having passed the previous night there.
