Sylvester C. Maier (Sy) died peacefully on Monday December 19, 2011, in Brighton CO. He was born, 91 years ago on April 20, 1920 in Apache, Oklahoma. He was the only child of Theresa Langer Maier and George G. Maier. The family moved to Chickasha, Oklahoma where Sy attended school from first grade through graduation at St. Joseph Academy. Sy met his wife, Almina Kasha Maier on a blind date when he and a friend drove to Kansas to visit relatives. On his seventh trip to Kansas he took Almina home as his bride after a traditional Czech family wedding on June 9, 1941. They lived on the Family farm outside of Chickasha Ok. with Sylvester's Father, George Almina & Sy's first child, Maria, died shortly after a premature birth. Their first son, Sylvester Jr. (Syl) was born March 17, 1944. On February 18, 1945 Marilyn, a healthy girl, was born. Joseph George, their youngest child, joined the family October 15, 1948. As the family grew so did the farm. Sy was an excellent manager and very hard worker. Besides growing high yield crops like alfalfa and wheat, he and Almina also had a very large vegetable garden. Sy especially liked raising cattle. He always kept the best beef for his family and sold the rest at profit. Sy was a very active church member, attending every Sunday with his family. He is a Past Grand Knight of the Holy Family Knights of Columbus. During the 1960's and 70's, Sy also sold crop insurance and was a Crop Adjuster for Federal Crop Insurance. He enjoyed "the less strenuous life" of meeting and helping other small farmers . In 1995, at age 75, Sy and Almina sold the farm in Oklahoma and moved to Fort Collins, Co. They continued to be very busy playing cards, gardening, and entertaining. They were always present at their grandchildrens' Band and Orchestra concerts and sporting events. In May of 2008 Sy and Almina moved to The Inglenook in Brighten, Co. Sy's health had worsened and he required more medical care. They both enjoyed the people and activities (especially the delicious food) at The Inglenook. It was a big loss for Sy when Almina moved to a memory care unit in 2009 and passed away in October 2010. Sy is survived by his three children : Syl of Kona Hi; Marilyn and husband, Michael S. Quirk of Fort Collins; plus Dr. Joe & wife, Karen of Bend ,Oregon.
