Bio

Shiner Gazette, 12 Jul 1894 Hanged Himself. On last Thursday night about nine o'clock the news spread over the city that W. Jilek, a blacksmith who has been a resident of Yoakum for a number of years, had committed suicide at his home in the western portion of the city. It seems that Jilek had been in a protracted spree and coming home about the hous [sic] above stated, he passed through the house and as he did so he bade his wife good bye, a thing which he had several times before done while intoxicated. She paid no particular attention to him, but a few minutes later she went to the cow pen to turn out a calf when she discovered her husband hanging in a lifeless condition from the shed, a small rope being drawm [sic] closely around his neck. An alarm was immediately given and it was learned that the attempt at suicide had been successful – Jilek being past all chances of recovery. Deceased leaves a wife and four sons and five daughters to mourn his sad-leaving, to all of whom we extend sincere sympathy. A post mortem examination was held, presided over by Justice E W Blakemon, yesterday morning and a verdict was rendered in accordance with the facts above stated, and at four o'clock the remains were interred in the Catholic cemetery. Deceased was fifty-six years of age. – Yoakum Times. [Tise, Vol. VI, St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, Yoakum, JILEK, Vaclav, died 1894, age 56 yrs]
