Ben J. Kocian of Shiner, 63 years, 2 months and 25 days, retired school teacher died at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 11, 1974 in the Shiner Hospital where he had been a patient for six weeks. His illness extended over a period of a year. The body lay in state at the Buffington Funeral Home, Shiner, until 9:30 a.m. Saturday, September 14, when it was taken to Sts. Cyril and Methodius’ Catholic Church where Holy Mass was offered at 10:30 a.m. by the Rev. Msgr. John J. Hanacek of La Grange and the Rev. Msgr. Alois J. Morkovsky of Hostyn. Burial was in the Shiner Catholic Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were his nephews, James Kocian, Gervas Wenglar, J.A. and Arthur Migl, all of Houston, George Kocian Jr. of San Antonio, Patrick Kocian of Victoria, Johnny Dobecka of Weimar and Edwin Kocian Jr. of Austin. The Rosary was recited at the Buffington Chapel Thursday, September 12 at 7:45 p.m. by the Knights of Columbus led by Adolph Seidenberger and Raymond Kocian Jr. The Parish Rosary was said Friday at 7:30 p.m. led by the Rev. Father Patrick Fidgeon, followed by the C.D. of A. led by Mrs. Larry Sedlmeyer. Ben John Kocian, one of 8 children, was born June 16, 1911 near Komensky, Lavaca County, Texas, son of Frank J. and Emilie (Darilek) Kocian, natives respectively of Frenstat, Czechoslovakia and Praha, Texas. He was reared on the family farm and attended the Komensky and Moravia Schools. There were seven boys and one girl in his family. He and all of his brothers chose the teaching profession for their careers. Mr. Kocian recently retired after 42 years of teaching in the Texas Public schools. He received his bachelor of science degree from Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos and graduated from the University of Houston with a master of education degree, majoring in math and history. He began his teaching career at Greive School where he remained four years, then taught for three years at Branecky School and for 13 years at Beasley School. Mr. Kocian then taught math for 8 years at Shiner Junior High School. The last 14 years of his teaching career were spent teaching junior high and elementary math in the Goliad Independent School District. Early in his career, he worked during the summers at various jobs including the Spoetzl Brewery, land surveyor and during the war at the ship years in Houston. Mr. Kocian was a lifelong member of the Catholic Church and was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, and the Texas State teachers Association. On December 28, 1937, he was married to Ida Migl in the Praha Catholic church. The couple made their home at Branecky, then Beasley School. About 1952 they made their home at the present residence in Shiner. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Ida Kocian of Shiner; a son, Benedict F. Kocian of Houston; one daughter, Mrs. Alfred (Carol) Boehm Jr. of Austin; his aged mother, Mrs. Emilie Kocian of Shiner; one sister, Mrs. Albert A. (Emily) Rab of Houston; six brothers, George and Jerome I. Kocian of Hallettsville, Frank E. Kocian of Shiner, John E. Kocian of Inez, Edwin A. Kocian of El Campo and Eugene P. Kocian of Houston; and three grandchildren, Cynthia, Michael and Robbie Kocian of Houston. He was preceded in death by his father May 9, 1956. Shiner Gazette, Thursday, September 19, 1974
