Shiner Gazette, 17 Feb 1972, page 1 Military Services For WWI Veteran Frank A. Billimek Military services were conducted for World War I veteran, Frank A. Billimek, at 11:00 a.m. Sunday, February 13, at Saints Cyril and Methodius’ Catholic Church with Requiem Mass offered by the Rev. Msgr. John J. Hanacek. The body lay in state at the Buffington Funeral Home, Shiner, where the Rosary was recited at 8:00 p.m. Saturday, and was taken to the church at 10:30 a.m. Sunday. Impressive military rites were conducted by members of the Shiner Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion Posts. Serving as pallbearers were Arnold Riske, Arnold Zabransky, Victor Pulkrabek, Joe Surovec, Woodrow Mladenka and Emil Huser. Color bearers and color guards were Emmett Blohm, Jerry Mikes, Melvin Ahrens, Monroe Menke, Adolph Vancura, Roy Hewig and Joe Strauss. The flag, which was folded by Eddie Jaks, was presented to his wife by Chaplain George Watzlavick. Taps, pre-recorded by Leonard Darilek, were sounded. Burial was in the Shiner Catholic Cemetery. Mr. Billimek passed away at 9:00 p.m. Friday, February 11, 1972 at the Trinity Lutheran Hoem in Shiner where he had been a resident since June 17, 1971. He attained the age of 82 years, 4 months and 5 days. Frank August Billimek, one of five children, was born October 6, 1889 at High Hill, Fayette County, Texas, son of Anton B. and Bertha (Schilhab) Billimek, natives respectively of Baelton, Austria and Czechoslovakia. The family moved to Flatonia and later to the Dreyer community in Gonzales County. In 1911 they established their home at Witting. Mr. Billimek, a retired barber, was inducted into the US Army September 19, 1917 and was discharged March 17, 1919. His foreign service was during the period from July 17, 1918 to January 11, 1919. While in France, he was in the battle at St. Mihiel. Upon his return, he again took up his life’s work of barbering. He was then married to Lena Zinkler, daughter of Joseph and Josephine (heiman) Zinkler. The couple made their home in Shiner and resided here continuously. He was a member of the Shiner Catholic Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars and had been a member for 51 years of the American Legion Kolar-Stanek Post No. 201 in Shiner. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Lena Billimek of Shiner; two brothers, Rudolph Billimek of Shiner, Anton J. Billimek Sr. of Moulton; one sister, Mrs. Anton (Anna) Bratrich of Moulton, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, October 20, 1923; his mother, May 11, 1944; and a brother, Louis A. Billimek, October 14, 1927.
