Bio

ANNA COUCH By Carolyn Odle Smotherman "Nanse Couch of Laurance Dist. S. C." bought 430 acres on Beaverdam Creek in Franklin County, GA in December 1815. This coincided with the settlement of the estate of her husband, Joseph Couch, who died before 16 Apr 1811 in Laurens County, SC. It appears that most of her family also moved to Franklin County, Georgia about this same time . The maiden name of Anna Couch is not known. Watson and Calloway are two of the surnames seen in descendants' families and Elijah Watson was co-administrator with Nancy on the Joseph Couch administration. Her husband, Joseph Couch, was the son of Thomas and Mary Couch. Thomas died, leaving a will written in 1772 and probated in 1784 in Ninety-Six District, SC. This will was witnessed by John Stroud. There are deeds in Brunswick County, VA in the 1730s between Thomas Couch Sr and Thomas Couch Jr. involving land bounded by William Stroud. Anna Couch, called Nancy, came to Bedford County, TN from Franklin County, Georgia in the 1820s. Her two oldest sons, Joseph and Thomas Couch, who married daughters of James Patton, had lived in Bedford County since about 1812. The only record of Nancy Couch that we have found in Bedford County is her presumed tombstone in the Couch Cemetery on Kellertown Road east of Wartrace: "N. Couch Dec. Oct 1840."
