Margaret "Maggie" Masching Winterscheidt was the daughter of Georg Heinrich "Henry" Masching and Maria Margaretha Schupferling, both born in Bavaria. At 6 weeks of age her family left for America and it took 3 months to cross the Atlantic. They settled in Wisconsin and then moved to La Salle County, IL after which they moved to Kansas in 1876. Her first marriage was to Henry Winterscheidt in 1870 in LaSalle, Illinois. Their children: Anna Katherine (1870-1930) Mary Margaret (1872-1956) Mary K. (1874-1877) Caroline "Carrie" (1875-1962) Helena "Lena" (1875-1964) Louise Mary (1879-1975) Ida Veronca (1884-1977) Henry "Hank" (1889-1954) Bertha (1891-1987) John "Herb" Herbert (1894-1945) She married 2nd Conrad Schuetz (1841-1922)in 1898 Falls City, Richardson, NE Brown County World 19 Oct 1934 Page 1 Mrs. Schuetz, of Mercier, Is Dead---Was Hit by Car Struck by an automobile as she was crossing a street in Mercier, Sunday evening, while returning from church services, Mrs. Margaret Schuetz, 81-year-old pioneer resident of Mercier community, died late Wednesday night at the Horton hospital, where she was taken immediately following the accident. Mrs. Schuetz was with a daughter, Mrs. Leonard Dorei, when a car occupied by Oscar Thomas, Ivan Armstrong, of Horton, accidentally struck her. The Horton young men explained they thought Mrs. Schuetz had decided to wait until their car passed before going on, but later stepped out, in time to be struck by the machine. Mrs. Schuetz, who was widely known among her friends as "Aunt Maggie," is survived by 2 sons, Henry K. Winterscheidt, Herbert Winterscheidt, both of Mercier; daughters, Mrs. Leonard Dorei, Mrs. C.A. Schuetz, of Mercier, Mrs. Frank Dorei, Mrs. Dan Scott, of Horton, Mrs. J.P. Schuetz, of Mayetta, Mrs. Dan Buser, of Halstead, Kans. In addition to the surviving children, Mrs. Schuetz was the mother of a daughter, Mary, who died when a girl, a daughter, Mrs. Henry [Piekenbrock], who died several years ago in Nebraska. Three brothers survive her: Conrad Masching, of Emmington, Ill., Andrew Masching, of Carroll, Iowa, Jacob Masching, of Los Angeles. There are 61 grandchildren, 26 greatgrandchildren, one of the grandchildren being Leonard Dorei, employed by Hiawatha Motor Co. Funeral services will be conducted at the church at Mercier, Friday morning, by Father Adelbert, burial in Mercier cemetery.
