Funeral services for Arlene D. Bowers age 94, of Spencer, were held Friday October 5, at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Bristow. Vicar Glen Stahlecker and Reverend Raymond Hagberg officiated with burial in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in rural Bristow. Visitation was held Thursday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Brockhaus Funeral Home in Spencer. Mrs. Bowers died Sunday September 30, at Butte Health Care Center. Arlene D. Bowers, daughter of Oscar and Olga Sandberg Johnson, was born on August 15, 1913 at Hamill, SD. She was the oldest of six children. Her father died as the result of an accident in 1923. Arlene was then nine years old and the family moved to Boyd County and lived with her mothers family. Arlene attended Rosedale school and Bristow High School. She had to work for her board to attend school. On January 15, 1930, Arlene married Thomas Bowers in Burke, SD. They were the parents of two children. Larry Roy was born November 14, 1930 and Karen Kay was born on December 27, 1942. Thomas and Arlene lived their entire 51 years of married life in and around Bristow. Arlene was the bookkeeper for Thomas for all his trucking. She was a faithful, active member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, serving as officer in most of the organizations of the church. She was also the oldest living member of the church. Arlene was active in the community, Bristow Womens Club, Bristow Homemakers, Organized Lucky Star 4-H Club, served on County Extension councils for both 4-H and Extension Clubs. She was instrumental in setting up the Ground Observer Corp in the 1950s, and setting up clinics for free polio vaccination and organized fundraisers for many charities in the 40s, 50s, and 60s. Arlene moved to Spencer in November of 1984, she was a member of the Spencer Womens Club and attended the Boyd County Senior Center in Spencer every day. She enjoyed playing cards, baking, entertaining friends and relatives. She received the Aksarben Good Neighbor Award in 2005. She loved spending time with her family and always ready to travel on a moments notice. On May 1st, 2005, she began living with her daughter and son-in-law, until February 23, 2007 when she entered the Butte Health Care Center. Arlene departed this life on September 30, 2007 at the Butte Health Care Center at the age of 94 years, l month and 15 days. Left with fond memories include her son, daughter, seven grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, six great great grandchildren, 2 sisters in law, 19 nieces and nephews, many cousins and friends. Arlene dearly loved and treasured her family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas in June 1981, her parents, sisters, Myrtle Scheinost and Evelyn Prestito and two brothers Melvin Johnson and Ivan Johnson, infant sister, Lavern, and daughter-in-law La Donna Johnson Bowers.
