Bio

Vesta Elizabeth (Cimmiyotti) Leis, 91, a resident of The Dalles, died Monday, April 19, 2010. She was born on June 14, 1918 to Leonard and Ora (Crum) Cimmiyotti in Hood River. She grew up with her four brothers and two sisters on her parents' large working farm on Klickitat Heights, a few miles northwest of Lyle. She attended grade school at Klickitat Heights School, and graduated from Columbia Union High school in White Salmon in June 1936. School activities were some of the main events in the community, and she enjoyed these events with her family and friends. On Sept. 20, 1939, she married Henry Frederick Leis at the home of her parents. She and her husband created a life in Lyle, first in a small house in town, then later building their dream home on 34 acres outside Lyle. Their love of the outdoors showed in their yard and gardens. She and her husband enjoyed their trips to the mountains and loved rock hounding. The many other treasures they came across in their paths were often displayed in their home or in their yard. They were active in their community, both finding their niche in making a difference for the people around them. In 1993 they moved to Dallesport to a smaller home with less land, but still maintaining colorful and rich gardens. In 2004 they moved into Flagstone Assisted Living in The Dalles, and then later to the Oregon Veteran's Home where they each lived until their death. She was a skilled seamstress as demonstrated by clothes she created and quilts she made and showed. Her handiwork is remembered in her delicate crochet table cloths and doilies, and the many knitted and crocheted afghans and blankets, stitching artwork, and bringing back to life her mother's button collection on fabric. She was active in the Lyle Women's Club for many years. She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Leis, Twin Falls, Idaho; sons Henry Leis, Port Angeles; and Richard Leis, Portland; daughter-in-law Janice Leis, Bingen; 15 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hank; youngest son, LaRoy; parents; and five siblings. Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, April 24 at 2 p.m. at St. Peter Catholic Church with Fr. Fabien officiating. Burial will follow at the Lyle Balch Cemetery in Lyle. Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements
