Fern H. Waldmann 94, of Ord died Thursday, May 6, 2010, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island. Fern was born July 5, 1915, at Kearney to Ray and Nora (Burdeen) Wiley. Her twin sister passed away at birth. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Paul, in 2003. Survivors are: daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Alvin Leska of Sargent, Kathy and Rick Sibbel of Ankeny, Iowa, and Jackie and Mark Schmidt of Hastings; son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Wilda Waldmann of Simpson, Kan.; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; sisters, Shirley Snyder of Dayton, Ohio, and Claire Jones of Rosemead, Calif.; and brother, Joe Wiley of Escanada, Mich. Fern attended school in Grand Island and graduated with The Class of 1933. She then attended University of Nebraska at Kearney. She taught school at District 1 near Comstock and boarded with Forrest and Minnie Montanye. Fern graduated from college in 1973, the same day as her daughter, Barbara. On May 14, 1940, Fern was united in marriage to Paul Waldmann at the Geranium Catholic Church. They farmed in Custer and Valley counties from 1940 to 1982. In 1982, they moved into Ord. Fern suffered a stroke in 2009 and moved into the Grandview Assisted Living in Ord. Fern was a dedicated teacher, teaching for 37 years. She taught in several rural schools and ended her career at St. Mary's Catholic School in Ord. She was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church and a member of the Valley County Teachers Association. She was a charter member of the Rho Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority. She loved teaching and the students she taught, and doing things for her family. She enjoyed cooking, baking and raised many chickens. Later in life, she enjoyed listening to Husker football. She was also preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Everette, Cecil and Donald; and a sister, Thelma Sare. Published in The Grand Island Independent on 5/9/2010
