Clyde Thomas "Tom" Freestone, age 86, of Vernal, passed away at the Uintah Care Center from natural causes April 26, 2010. He was born Nov. 25, 1923 in Vernal, to Rueben Thomas Freestone and Adora Batty Freestone. He married Maurine Peterson on June 24, 1947. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple on February 15, 1991. Tom was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints and served as a priesthood and Sunday school teacher for over 35 years. He served for many years as a Vernal Temple Worker. During World War II he served his country by enlisting in the United States Army Air Corps where he received training as an aerial gunner. His airplane, the B-17 Flying Fortress was shot down over Vienna, Austria. He was wounded and taken captive as prisoner of war. Tom had love for learning. He had a great passion for history and Archeology. He presented lectures at archaeological symposiums throughout the Western United States. He served as President of the Uintah Basin Archeology Society and The State of Utah Archeology Society. He received distinguished honors for his dedicated work in the field of Archeology. Tom was an educator, later became Director of Juvenile Court services in the Uintah Basin. He spent his professional career helping and assisting young people in the Tri-County area. He was a rancher and loved his Freestone Ranch on Little Brush Creek. He was a member of the National Society of Sons of Utah Pioneers and because of this heritage he was one of three family members who donated part of his great grandfather's original homestead to Vernal City for the development of the Freestone Legacy Walking Park. Tom and his wife, Maurine passed closely in time together after 62 years of marriage. He is survived by his children, Judy Downard of Bountiful, Connie Perry (Ron) of Vernal, Carol Kalcich (Dale) of Farmington, New Mexico and Jeff Freestone (Kim) Vernal; and his sister LeOra Jacobe of Vernal. He has 15 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren and two more to be born in September. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Wilson Freestone; son-in-law, Robert Downard; grandson Robert Todd Downard; and great-granddaughter, Asia Linn Lance. Joint funeral services were held May, 3. Burial in the Vernal Memorial Park under direction of the Hullinger Mortuary.
