Bio

Frances K. Herzik, died peacefully in her sleep, at age 94, on a day which was special to her: her daughter's birthday, Wednesday, November 11, 2009. She was born October 19, 1915 to Charles and Kate Brunner, and lived her entire life in Austin, Texas. She was a gifted artist, and was especially talented in medical illustration, inspiring one of her teachers to take her work to an exhibit to New York. She enjoyed painting, including miniature Christmas village of Old Austin scenes, with which she decorated her home at holiday time, and which will continue to grace the homes of those she loved. Frances liked needlework, and had a passion for reading, especially being interested in Austin and Texas history. She was a talented gardener, and loved her flower beds and puttering around in the garden. She attended The University of Texas, majoring in anthropology and art, and after a few years went to work for the Texas Department of Health as an executive secretary. It was there that she met her lifelong love, her husband of 63 years, Gus Herzik, and she enjoyed from then on nurturing the family, filling the home with her delicious cooking, traveling all over the country and to many parts of the globe, and leading an active social life at home with Gus. She loved nothing more than drinks and dinner surrounded by their many friends. She was a member of Alpha Xi Delta while at UT, and remained active in the sorority for many years. She tirelessly volunteered herself in various capacities over the years when called upon. But family was always a first love. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister Ella Bell. She leaves behind her husband, Gus, daughter Cathlyn (Kaye), two grandsons Josh and Clay, and two great-granddaughters, Kaitlin and Aimee. Mom, you were loved and you will be missed. "I am gone, but not away… I am here, but cannot stay For I am wind, and rain and sun But when you need me, I will come." The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 14, 2009 with a funeral mass beginning at 2:00 p.m. at St. Theresa Catholic Church, 4311 Small Drive. Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Austin. - wcfish.com
