OLIVIA — Luverne "Vern" William Draheim, 82, of Olivia died Wednesday at Golden Living Center in Olivia. The service will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Cross of Calvary Lutheran Church in Olivia. Military rites will be provided by the Olivia VFW and American Legion. Burial will be in the Olivia Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will begin at noon Tuesday at the church. Arrangements are with Dirks-Blem Funeral Service of Olivia. Memorials are preferred to the World Hunger Appeal at Cross of Calvary; or the Renville County Chapter of the American Red Cross. He was born April 14, 1926, in Olivia to Arvie and Lydia (Krueger) Draheim. He grew up on the family farm and attended Olivia schools. He served in the local National Guard unit until entering the Air Force in 1945. He worked at several short-term jobs until he took on-the-job training at Ted's Auto Body Repair in Olivia. He later purchased the business and added small engine repair and lawn and garden sales and service. In 1967, he began to work for the U.S. Postal Service where he was employed until his retirement. He married Virginia Ewer on Jan. 13, 1951, in Olivia. He was a member of the American Legion and a member of Cross of Calvary Lutheran Church where he served as an usher and on the mission committee for many years. He was a Webelos scout leader and Boy Scout master for several years, chair of the disaster services for the Renville County Chapter of the American Red Cross as well as the treasurer. He was on the reorganizing committee of the Olivia Cemetery Association in 1957 and served as chairman, secretary and treasurer over the years. They were foster parents to several children. He is survived by his wife and his son: Curt (and Kerrie) Draheim of Brisbane, Australia. He was preceded in death by his infant son: Charles Luverne; one sister; and one brother.
